Redang Airfield in the Distance

Wikipedia Extract

Redang Island, locally known as Pulau Redang or just "Redang" is one of the largest islands off the east coast of Malaysia. It is one of nine islands, which form a marine park, and which offer snorkeling and diving opportunities. Access is from Merang or Kuala Terengganu on boats operated by the resorts; there is also a small airport with services operated by Berjaya Air from Singapore (Seletar Airport) and Kuala Lumpur (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport).

The island is also an important conservation site for sea turtles. Previously, the indiscriminate economic exploitation of turtle eggs had caused fewer turtles returning to nest on the island. This has led the Terengganu state government to set up the Koperasi Setiajaya Pulau Redang in 1989, a cooperative aiming to develop and manage socio-economic programmes that could improve the livelihood of Pulau Redang locals without endangering its natural resources.

The Pulau Redang archipelago comprises Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Paku Besar, Pulau Paku Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Besar, Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Ling and Pulau Pinang. Pulau Redang is the biggest of all the islands in the Marine Park, measuring about 7 km long and 6 km wide. Its highest peak is Bukit Besar at 359 metres above sea level.

Pulau Redang

Introduction

Redang is a small island approximately 8km long by 6km wide. It is part of a group of islands situated on the north east coast of Peninsula Malaysia.

Redang is a very popular tourist island famous for its excellent diving sites. Most parts of the island are only accessible by boat which gives the various resorts a nice remote feel. The island has many beautiful white sandy beaches and has several resorts and guest houses at various places around the rugged coastline.

The airfield is situated on the western side nestled into the side of a rock face and is very near the ferry terminal where boats are available to all parts of the island. Parking is available for several small aircraft. The ramp area has recently been enlarged and can cater for visiting flights. Note that Berjaya operate a regular Dash 7 service to Redang so bear it in mind when parking. The DCA charts and Google Earth do not show the latest modifications (at time of writing).

Accommodation

Berjaya Resort is the only resort reachable by road from the airport. It is one of the top resorts on the island and, while not particularly cheap, is very good value for money and sports very beautiful private beachfronts.

Laguna Resort. A 20 minute ferry taxi ride. The resort is quite comprehensive, is nicely laid out and has many clean tidy chalet rooms. However it is the favourite resort for my mainland Chinese tour groups so the food options are limited and queues at checkin can be very daunting. The beachfront is nice with a few restaurants and bars nearby.

Seri Pacifica Resort. Sharing the same beach as the Laguna albeit at the opposite end the Seri Pacifica is more of a boutique resort featuring some extremely comfortable rooms and nice facilities. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Prices are not too cheap especially in high season.
